The youngest children at our school (ages 3-4) start with the Foundation Stage, which emphasizes physical and emotional growth as well as building essential literacy, numeracy, communication, and language skills. Children engage in learning within a flexible, indoor/outdoor setting that nurtures their creativity and problem-solving abilities. At Unison High School, we understand the vital role of play in child development, which is why we provide a welcoming, safe, and stimulating environment where children can explore, create, and let their imaginations flourish.
There are seven areas of learning that shape the EYFS curriculum. These include:
Communication and Language
Children are encouraged to actively engage in their learning, developing control, coordination, and movement. They are guided to understand the importance of physical activity and how to make informed, healthy choices during meal times.
Physical Development
Children are given ample opportunities to be active, enhancing their coordination, manipulation, and movement skills. They learn the value of physical activity and are supported in making healthy food choices. Additionally, children discover the significance of exercise, sleep, and balanced nutrition for overall health. Both indoor and outdoor spaces are available for energetic physical play.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development
At Unison High School, we help children develop a strong, positive sense of self and an appreciation for others. We provide an environment where children can form meaningful relationships, build respect for one another, and learn to manage their emotions, enhancing their social skills.
Literacy
We offer a wide range of books to cater to all interests, encouraging children to explore and develop a love for reading and writing. This fosters their creativity and opens up imaginative worlds, sparking curiosity and a passion for literature from an early age.
Mathematics and Numeracy
Early mathematics is focused on using mathematical concepts in everyday communication. Children are encouraged to strengthen their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, solving basic sums, and describing shapes, spaces, and measurements.
Understanding the World
This area of learning encourages children to explore and investigate the world around them. They have opportunities to play outdoors and go on planned day trips, where they can experience and appreciate cultural visits. We emphasize the importance of valuing the creative arts and expression from the earliest age.
Expressive Arts and Design
Children are encouraged to express themselves creatively through activities like art, cutting, sticking, drawing, modelling, and using various materials. Every day offers opportunities to spark their imagination, whether through building dens and castles with blankets or engaging in role-play and music.
